Help On Choosing The Right 10Si Alternator
When choosing a Delco Remy type 10Si model alternator, there are many considerations. First, what is the polarity of your application. Many cars and trucks use a negative ground configuration, where the case has a direct connection to the negative battery post. Tractors and some automobiles use a positive ground, meaning the case has direct contact with the positive post. Positive grounded alternators should be insulated from the vehicle's common ground, if it is negative. Next, a voltage should be chosen. Most cars and trucks again use a 12 volt system, but some tractors may use 6 volts. The 8 volt option is very uncommon outside of a custom applications. All of these voltages have different amperage ratings. Amperage is a function of voltage and the number of windings on the stator, higher voltage and a greater number of windings will produce more power in the form of amperes. Further, you can choose between a standard voltage regulator for direct replacement in a vehicle or a self-exciting voltage regulator for a custom application (What is a Self Exciting Alternator?).

The 10Si model 6 volt alternator, due to its simplicity and longevity, is most common for tractor generator to alternator conversion applications, particularly for Ford 2N, 8N and 9N tractor generator-to-alternator upgrades. Both contain the regular and chrome units, the 45 ampere models on the left and the 70 ampere models on the right. The 8 volt Delco Remy type 10Si model alternator is very uncommon, but not unheard of. There are some 8 volt tractors, but mostly they are used to give a little extra juice to a 8 volt system. If you opt to go this route, remember to replace all bulbs and lights in the now 8 volt circuit with their 12 volt equivalents.

Below you will find all of the 12 volt 10Si type alternators we carry. You will first find the negative ground section, followed by the positive ground section. Both contain the regular and chrome units, the 105 ampere models on the left and the 140 ampere models on the right. The 12 volt Delco Remy 10Si model alternator is most common with cars and trucks, very few tractors run 12 volt. Many people will, however, convert their existing 6 volt systems to 12 volt, to make finding and repairing the alternator easier. This is quite a process and requires changes to lights, gagues, battery wires and some other electrical components.

How to Convert the Delco Remy Style 10Si Type Alternator to Positive Ground Voltage Regulator
Converting GM based alternators to 6 volt positive ground is easy
Below are two pictures of the inside of the GM based, Delco-Remy type 10-Si series alternator in both negative ground (left picture) and positive ground (right) versions.
The negative ground 6 or 24 volt GM based alternator is configured the same as the standard 12 volt negative ground alternator. Note the position of the white insulators on the three screws securing the brush holder assembly and voltage regulator. The third screw near the top of the photo does not have an insulator.
For the 6, 12 or 24 volt positive ground application you must wire the alternator like the one shown above. Note the three screws that hold the brush holder assembly and voltage regulator, all three are insulated. After you have installed the positive ground rectifier you must wire the alternator using the red jumper shown above. The voltage regulator in these positive ground alternators are still negative ground. The only component that makes the alternator positive ground is the rectifier. The red jumper wire is connected between the (negative) "Bat" stud on the rectifier to the ground screw for the voltage regulator. The ring terminal on the red wire must contact the ground clip on the brush holder but be insulated from the screw. Also, when installing the stator and connecting it to the rectifier as shown above on the right side of the picture where the three nuts are. These 3 stator terminals must be lifted a bit so the rear of the terminals do not contact the finned part of the rectifier. The stator leads shorted to the rectifier or inside case is a common problem. Once the alternator is complete and installed on the vehicle you may need to excite the alternator for the first time. To excite the positive ground alternator you run a jumper from the case (positive power) to the #1 spade terminal on the alternator. With the vehicle running you momentarily touch the jumper from the case to the #1 terminal, then alternator should start charging. After you have run the vehicle for a bit at above idle speed the voltage should build to around 7.5 volts.
